Touch screen dimensions (tolerance)

Postby BALCER » 11 Nov 2012, 20:00

hi there.
I just realized that for 45 buck I can get touch screen for my Accord 2003. That car has something like a touch screen but it is actually two rows of sensors X and Y on the left and on the bottom of the screen. And certain buttons on the navi can work even if you wont touch the screen. Anyway. I'm guessing sticking something that is less than 1mm thick on that will not affect that functionality. Am I right?
My real question is:
Will 7inch touch screen (153mm/85mm wroking area) be large enough for my factory Navi screen? My visible area on the screen is about 5mm wider and approx. 4mm higher - 158mm . 89mm. Will it be safe to use that touch screen? I mean, I read that outside area (inactive) is kinda fragile and I don't want to break it, simple as that. 2mm around the screen is not a lot but...
And actually with the finger it's not possible to touch that area. I'm not gonna use any stylus so maybe that screen will do the job? What you thing experts? :)

Hello,
you need to find out what type of touchscreen you have. If resistive touchscreen in your car you will be need something like TSC-206IM . If Infrared touchscreen in your car, then we do not have a solution for your case.

Well. My factory screen isn't a touchscreen. It's a infra red controlled screen decided by sectors. And particular buttons on the menu are placed where sectors are. There's no calibration and it's all together probably unbreakable. :D
But the thing is: I do not want to implement new method of screen control in original Navi soft. I need real touch screen just to control my Car PC I'm about to buy in nearest future. I really don't think sticking such a thin layer of transparent material (whatever it is) may cause problems with working my stone-age infra red sensors. And that was my only concern in that case.
My other issue is: is it okay to put your after-market touchscreen with 153mm/85mm working area on my screen that has visible dimensions: 158mm / 89mm. So about 2mm border of non-functional touchscreen would be on my factory screen. Can I practice that? I'm not gonna use any stylus on the screen so I don't think I may damage passive are of the touchscreen.
Correct me if I'm wrong at some stage.
Does it all make any sense? :)
