12 Volvo video interface wiring

Postby jokeapri » 24 Jan 2017, 02:26

Hello, I just received my QPI-LVTX interface today and I have been going over everything in anticipation of installing it over the next couple days. Looking through the installation manual, I notice that it only specifically mentions where to splice and install the CAN-H-HS, CAN-L-HS, and ACC wires. I am sure what to do with the ground wire. But where do I install the F-CAN-DET, SAFE, REAR, CAN-H-LS & CAN-L-LS wires? Do I need to get a schematic for the rest of the factory CAN connector and splice those wires in as well? Thanks in advance.

Hello.
I just received my QPI-LVTX interface today and I have been going over everything in anticipation of installing it over the next couple days.

Please provide the number of your order.

where to splice and install the CAN-H-HS, CAN-L-HS, and ACC wires.

CAN wires can be found behind the monitor unit as shown in the manual. ACC and GND can be connected to the cigarette lighter.

But where do I install the F-CAN-DET, SAFE, REAR

These wires are not used in your case.

Yuretz,
Thank you for the reply. I bought the interface from your eBay Store. Item#252154947907. Firstly, I cannot believe how quickly I received the interface! Less than a week from overseas. Wow!

Yes in the manual it does say where to install the CAN-H-LS, CAN-L-LS AND ACC.

"These wires are not used in your case."

Does that mean the CAN-L-LS & CAN -L-LS are those not used as well?

Thanks again,
Joe

ACC and GND of all connected devices should be taken from one and the same place. In your case you may connect them to the back of the radio or the cigarette lighter.

Does that mean the CAN-L-LS & CAN -L-LS are those not used as well?

Yes, these wires are not used.

OK, I installed the interface today (Per the manual and your instructions) and I'm experiencing some issues. I believe there has to be something more to the CAN wires.

The unit is supposed to switch the screen to the reverse camera as soon as the gear selector is put into reverse. This does not happen. Nothing happens when the gear selector is put into reverse. Also, I am supposed to be able to long press the factory NAV button to switch between video inputs, this also does not happen. However, I can use the supplied MODE button or infra-red remote control to switch between video sources.

Without trying to make this post too long, I do want to go into detail on what I did, with hopes to help troubleshoot.
First, I hooped up the reverse camera power to the "Rear Camera power cable", supplied with the interface, This cable is plugged into the port marked "Rear" on the interface. Then I connected the Yellow RCA lead from the camera to the Yellow RCA "Rear" input. It appears the "REAR" port is doing nothing, as it does not power on the camera. In order to rule out the camera being bad, I connected the power and ground leads from the camera to a separate 12v power and grnd. The camera powered on, but still nothing on the screen (as it was still connected to the "Rear" RCA input). I then swapped the Yellow RCA lead from the camera to "Video 1" RCA input, switched the Mode button & I can see the camera on the screen. So I know the camera works and I know the video modes work.

So again, I believe there is something missing with those CAN wires. I did hook up the CAN-H-HS & CAN-L-HS exactly as in the manual. ACC & Ground, as you suggested are hooked to the cigarette lighter.

I eagerly await your help.
Thanks again,
Joe

Hello.
First, try connecting CAN-H/L-LS wires instead of CAN-H/L-HS . Also, check if there are any other options in the Factory mode-Util1-Car model . If this doesn't help then provide a clear picture of where you've connected CAN wires.

This is turning into a nightmare! I followed your advice and hooked up the CAN-H/L-LS instead. Now my screen is completely black! No display at all! I removed the CAN-H-LS wires. And still no display. I called around to a local auto salvage yard and they want $200 for a replacement screen!!! What now????

CAN wires can't affect the screen. Try disconnecting the video interface and check whether the screen is working or not.

I disconnected the interface and the screen will still not come on.
CAN wires can't affect the screen

Then what could have caused the screen to malfunction? The only thing I did was swap out the CAN wires as you instructed.

I am going to remove the sub board as well from the screen and see if that makes a difference.

CAN wires from the interface are connected to listen for the reverse signal and signals of some OEM button presses from the CAN bus. It doesn't have any potential and doesn't send any commands to the CAN bus, so connecting these wires can't damage any of the OEM devices.
The problem may be in the sub-board or the ribbon cable of the video interface. So, connect everything back to how it was before for testing.

Yuretz,
I took pictures throughout the entire installation. I will remove the sub board today and see what happens.

Yuretz,
I believe that I have found the issue. In the picture you can see the original board design (as in the manual) had both wire harnesses exiting the display from the bottom & the board that I received, has the wire harnesses exiting the side of the display. (Not the best design.)
board diffs.png

It is a very tight fit for the wires to exit the display, and when you install the display back into the cavity in the car, there is very little room and this harness gets pinched. The wires are extremely thin and 2 of them broke. I repaired them the best that I could and the display came back on. I think I might be better off replacing the harness. Your thoughts?

For future design, I would suggest going back to the one with the wires exiting the bottom of the display. There appears to be plenty of room for the wires on the bottom, once the display is installed back into the car.

I did not try the CAN wires again. I had to pick up my kids and didn't have enough time. I will look at that tomorrow and get back to you.

Thanks,
Joe
